His friends were “a ragtag bunch of drama people and English geeks I sat with by social necessity,” (Green p.4), and he lived a sheltered life: “As an alumnus of Culver Creek, had done things I had only heard about: the secret parties, streaking through the hay fields…drugs, drinking, and cigarettes, (Green p.7). Prior to attending Culver Creek, Miles’ life was a dull existence. Looking for Alaska is told from the point of view of sixteen-year-old, Miles Halter-a tall, lanky boy obsessed with learning the last words of famous people-as he leaves his life in Florida to attend his father’s alma mater: Culver Creek Preparatory High School in Alabama. John Green is most commonly known for his best seller, The Fault in Our Stars, which was converted into a major motion picture in 2014, however the author rose into the spotlight for rather controversial reasons following the publication of his first novel, Looking for Alaska, in 2005.
